“Reggaetonero” Or “Caco”?
In the late 80s and early 90s in Puerto Rico, before it became known as “Reggaeton,” the music scene was referred to as “Underground” or “Rap y Reggae.” It was heavily influenced by Jamaica’s Dancehall & Reggae and U.S. Hiphop, infused with EDM and Caribbean sounds. Unlike today’s global popularity, Reggaeton “Underground” with its uncensored street lyrics was only for hardcore fans who could relate. The music was controversial, to the point that listening to it in public could lead to harassment and confiscation by the police. It faced disdain from fans of other genres, leading to the derogatory term “Cacos” for the movement’s artists, fans, and participants. “Caco” was the original term for a “Reggaetonero,” distinguishing those who grew up with the original movement from new fans.
